think poor…

Some very scary numbers, a time portal to early 70s mountaineering gear, and an interview worthy of your time

These days, with the world in economic free-fall, it seems like a lot of folks are considering boats as a way of navigating hard times. Which actually makes a certain amount of sense.

For starters, a boat can take you to places where the cost of living is more amenable to your current finances. Throw in that more often than not, a boat requires forced downsizing and simplification of one’s lifestyle. Which requires less, rather than more money than land based folk.

With me so far?

Adapting to a simplified minimalist lifestyle is not always easy in a consumerist world. Most folk, being conditioned to solving all problems by spending money, find it akin to quitting smoking or getting off drugs cold turkey. The problem being we’re all habituated to spending more than we can afford while spending less is considered a social faux pas.

To successfully live and cruise on a boat, one has to change your way of thinking…

Think poor.

Come to think of it that might be a good VolksCruiser t-shirt design.

But seriously, changing the emphasis from “what I want” to “what I can afford” for most people is a fairly radical concept.

So, here’s the question…

What can you afford? How much is a sustainable budget so you don’t have to beg and pimp stuff on YouTube to get by.

Think about it. It’s not a simple question and more akin to a high stakes chess or backgammon problem.

Some more on the subject soon come.
