some future plans…

Some interesting reading, regarding soft power, and in the “Why do they do it?” department…

One of the carrots I hold out to myself is that when in some quiet anchorage, I’ll be able to read all of the Travis McGee novels in order without any distractions. It should only take a couple of weeks but, with the current state of affairs, it’s not as easy as you’d think.

I often wonder what John D. MacDonald would have written if he were around today. I’m sure Travis and Meyer would have some opinions of note.

An author for another anchorage would be Robert Crais. Spending a couple of weeks with Joe Pike and Elvis Cole would be no bad thing. I have read all of the books with the exception of the new one “The Big Empty” which I’ll be saving till I’ve read the nineteen books preceding it in order.

Yeah, my ideal paradise is a quiet anchorage and a bunch of good books…

  1. I’m cool if this doesn’t pass your review, but – way to push my buttons today. Now I totally support supporting authors and I have no problem paying for books; even as expensive as they’ve gotten to be these days. But when an author has been gone for ~20 years and I’ve already got paperback copies of many of their novels I can’t justify paying what they’re asking for digital copies. Most JDM novels go for $12-$15 each. You’re looking at like $300 for just the Travis McGee ones. Have you got some secret-squirrel back door dealer or something?

    1. I feel your pain. Most books, especially digital books are priced way higher than they should be. So much for living in a time where greed is the order of the day.

Most books I buy on sale when they are deeply discounted. The bulk of my Travis McGee books I bought for $1.99. As it happens the Last Crais book I read took a year before the price dropped to $2.99 (and only for a couple of days). I don’t expect to read his newest book for at least a year when they put it on sale.

I do have a lot of paperbacks onboard for trades and love it when I can find a used book store but there’s not much of that down here in the Caribbean these days.
