every boat has some stupid…

Wendig on AI, Neil Young making sense, and in the “WTF Texas” department…

As I’ve oft mentioned before, I actually like working on boats. Well, let’s say most of the time. The parts where being a big guy working in tiny spaces is a sorta/kinda bummer.

However, the boat work I most enjoy is when you get to remove some stupid. Dispensing with those WTF were they doing bits of stupid that designers, builder, or previous owner put in to the boats we like.

In a world where people buy perfect boats and pay bushels of dollars for the the BEST, you’d think that some boats were stupid free.

Nope, every boat has some stupid.

As it happens, the Islander 36 has about the same stupid quotient as most classic plastic. For instance, there’s a block of wood under the forestay whose only purpose, it would seem, is to rot.

Which, indeed, it has.

So, my job for today or tomorrow is to clean out the rotten bit of teak and replace it with a replacement block of something that will not rot. Some kind of simple.

It is difficult to describe the pure pleasure that replacing that little bit of stupid on the Islander will generate.

Then again, there are other bits of stupid to be dealt with and little bits of happiness in store for the future.

So it does go…
