a possible VolksCruiserish project…

A gold statue, some stuff you might want to know, and something important in the “decency” department…

Here’s a possible cruising boat that interests me…

A VolksCruiserish project? The Brasileirinho by Roberto Barris Yacht Design

Yeah, I’ll admit that this is not what most people would consider a cruising boat. But in my experience, “most people” are, more often than not, wrong.

Still, it takes someone with some vision to consider an ocean-crossing row boat as the basis for cruising someplace like the Caribbean. The Brasileirinho by Roberto Barris Yacht Design, makes me think how neat it would be to build and use this sort of plywood and glass vessel. Sure the row to windward from St Thomas to Saint Martin might be a bitch but well within the abilities of anyone in reasonable shape.

I’ll also admit that the fact the plans are available for just $350 US dollars and it’s a pretty straight forward ply/glass build would make for a pretty affordable and fast to build VolksCruiserish project.

  1. I have always been in the “why row when you can sail” camp. But, after 3 days becalmed within 30 miles of Madeira……I did start sculling; it was enough to placate the wind Gods and within an hour a spinnaker filling breeze came in. Funny enough, I was surprised to see a man who looked 70, stand up facing forward rowing in a 20ft semi open boat about 5 miles offshore.

Super exposed in one of those, gonna need a lot of sun-block.

Surely your Stretched Micro with oars is a better compromise?
