An important fact, a movie I’m looking forward to, and in the “pretty much really says it all” department… So, how about a Catalina 27? It was (and still is) a very popular 27-foot sailboat. Catalina made 6662 of the boats between 1971 and 1991 and as a result, there are a lot of affordable …
A map in a surprising place of interest, happy days for some, and in the “economic musings” department… The William Shaw designed Pearson 27 is an interesting boat. Built from 1986 through 1991, you’re now seeing them selling for as little as $6K and they’re very much worth checking out. Offhand, I see a lot …
A book for our times, math challenged, and in the “Yeah, I’m going to miss PBS” department… So, let’s say you want a boat to do the Northwest Passage or, just maybe, how about doing something really insane and do a non-stop circumnavigation of the Americas. What boat would you choose? As far as I …
A cartoon making sense, Sail Delmarva is on a roll, and in the “WTF am I going to do without Tiny Desk Concerts?” department… It has been pointed out to me many times that the downside of a small boat is that they’re small. The group think being bigger is always better… right? Well, that …
About those wind farms, EBM getting it right, and speaking of slow motion train wrecks… I’ve always thought that the most bang for the buck in cruising boats fits into a 27-foot envelope. Smaller is too small for most and bigger starts to expand the budget more than most VolksCruisers want to spend. A 27-foot …
Some signs of the times, a timely podcast, and Triumph of the Will directed by Homer Simpson… A textbook example of everything you need in 30 feet is the Dufour Arpege… There’s a great article in Voile with some excellent pictures about the Arpege that is well worth reading. The pictures show just how one …
All you need to know about aviation safety, a podcast worth checking out, and in the “almost ‘H’ season” department… Where saving money on boats is concerned, it’s all about keeping the big picture in focus. Well that and knowing what you can afford, setting a sustainable budget, and sticking to it. The problem arises …
EBM with a couple of good points, stupid stuff, and in the “I have a real bad feeling about this” department… Yeah, gettin’ by on gettin’ by is my stock-in-tradeLiving it day-to-day, picking up the pieces wherever they fallJust lettin’ it roll, lettin’ the high times carry the lowJust living my life easy come, easy …
A Carl Sagan book everyone should read, a bit of milk history, and in the “Hitler had tariffs” department… I’ve always wanted to own a bilge keel cruising boat. Partly because of the shoal draft and drying out upright. Mostly though, I just wanted to see what they were like. As it happens, there’s a …
The return of child labor, a podcast I’ll be following, and in the “crime pays” department… Someone asked me the other day what boat I’d buy if money were not an issue and, while it’s a silly question, I did do some thinking. In fact, I did a lot of thinking. It turns out that …
