  1. A 1 in10 chance would be a really poor boat. Some people called me crazy for going in an engineless 40 year old plywood boat with no radio or liferaft. I just knew smaller boats had crossed with little issue. Ignorance is bliss. Its still safer than riding around London on a motorcycle.

Humans are their own worst enemy, stay away from them……

  2. Agree with Ian for the most part: good character is hard to find and to be treasured and nurtured when you do. Living a decade in latin america has displayed the overall societal character flaw that dogs this 2nd world sub-paradise >>> corruption. One astute 3.5 decade expat down here estimates 95% of men have jacked their wives around with affairs. In this vein how likely is it to establish even a handful of trustful male relationships when one in 20 seems to hold enough honor not to betray what is supposedly their best friend? (On the other hand how many good friends does a person need? Seems to vary by nature). It carries right over into biz and governmental behavior. Yadda yadda yadda, same ole same old. Couple it with overall educational ignorance and a virtual desert of virtuous human behavior. More so in latam but basically the blueprint globally. Probably why many sailors take such solace in the brutal but pure honesty of the natural world and tend to be solitary, small clan types. I prefer to seek out fellow gamma rat types. Gammas: unlike betas who cower and go along to get along, or alphas, who naturally tend to dominate and love control. Gammas seek out their own nice little fiefdom off to the side, choose a fine mate usually, and do their own thing. A general description of the nomadic sailor. This, and 20 pesos down here, buys a cup of locally grown, luscious, jolting joe. Meanwhile, sail on……………….
