A blast from the past, Scalzi on that AI slop, and in the “apt last words” department…
Cruising, by its very nature is a nomadic pursuit. However, more often than not, it’s more akin to nomadized tourism.
To tell you the truth, I’ve never been a big fan of being a tourist. Luckily for me, as an Itinerant camera op I’ve visited a lot of places of interest while shooting news and making films. Visiting places with a purpose greater than just checking out cool ruins or museums is a better fit for me.
All nomadic cultures have an important reason for their mobility. Whether it’s following the seasons for work or commerce there is always an underlying good reason to move on. While a lot of folks consider nomads to be some kind of negative economic factor they are, in fact, a very needful part of society…
Sellable goods, services, and distribution of ideas.
Think about that for a moment.
A successful society needs those things and nomadic cultures have always provided them. Tourist culture, on the other hand, not so much. In fact, most tourism actually sucks the life out of whatever culture it grows in.
I mention this because I’m currently wrestling with where I’m going, what purpose I need to fuel it, and have it make sense in this current cluster fuck of a world.
But, more on that as it develops…
