the good old days…

Yep, it’s still “H” season, not a great idea, and who’d have thought

A long time ago, we were sailing in the English channel headed towards Fécamp when we got into a school of mackerel. Since we had a couple of handlines out and were trailing a log it got crazy real fast.

These days most folks don’t have a clue what a trailing log is but the short form is a spinning thing trailed behind the boat which conveys speed and distance for navigation purposes. Anyway, the important part for this story is that the line rotates as well.

The handlines in question had a lure preceded by five flies all with hooks…

So, what happens when all of a sudden you’ve hooked a dozen mackerel with a handline on either side of the trailing log?

The short answer is ‘clusterfuck’ and the long answer is a fishline/log tangle that would take a couple of hours to unsnarl, a lot of mackerel for dinner, and a cockpit that looked like a murder scene.

Good times…

The funny thing, in hindsight, it’s one of my best memories of sailing in France on the first Loose Moose. Well, that and the orange sunglasses but that’s another story.

No videos, no selfies, no Facebook to share it with, and no Starlink. It was a day I still remember and all the better for it.

  1. Just because you can post something online, does not mean you should/must.
