I got an email this morning from 48° North with their monthly offering of pimpage yacht gear. Of course, it’s stuff I can’t afford or need including a $3K 3hp outboard. Meanwhile, Practical Sailor sends me reviews pimping million dollar boats these days and, considering that it has always been the budget boaters best friend, what’s with the turn towards abject consumerism?
It all makes my brain hurt.
On the outboard front, I’m now waiting for a couple of needful parts for the Yamaha 3hp and I have a 20-year old Tohatsu 5hp that needs to be brought back to life which will be the last outboard on the to-do list.

Algorithm and profit driven perhaps. There is no end of in-experienced would be world travellers on PooTube, buying hurricane/sunk/damaged/salvaged yachts to renovate, when for the same money they could buy something ready to go.
The logic seems to be, “I cant afford 1 million on a fancy/trendy condomaran, but i can afford to buy a junk one for $20,000 and spend $100K making it good” . Its like driving that rusted out E-Type held together only by a layer of paint, only difference is, when the chassis of the E-Type snaps on the road, you can probably walk home…….
