a boat I quite fancy…

A Carl Sagan book everyone should read, a bit of milk history, and in the “Hitler had tariffs” department…

I’ve always wanted to own a bilge keel cruising boat. Partly because of the shoal draft and drying out upright. Mostly though, I just wanted to see what they were like.

As it happens, there’s a Virgo Voyager for sale for not a lot of money in Scotland…

Back when we were living in Paris, I seriously considered buying a hull & deck Virgo with the intention of cruising Europe and then sailing it back to the US of A. While small for the purpose, it was the closest thing around to the Pacific Seacraft Flicka designed by the great Bruce Bingham. It was also available as a junk rig which made it a lot more attractive for the cruising I had in mind.

The Virgo might not be as pretty as some or have as much character as the Flicka but it is well worth checking out if you’re looking for a minimum envelope cruising boat

  1. Thats a bargain! My boat partners father, when we was sailing a 19ft bilge keel Caprice, had one of the earliest Junk rigged Virgos, the space onboard was astonishing given it was “only” 4ft longer. I met a guy in Galicia in one who i later caught up with in Martinique, so certainly Atlantic capable. So much more liveable boat than the Coromandel.
