Some interesting NOAA/Bill Nye news, a scary question, and another case of sanewashing…
For the last couple of years, Starlink has become a popular solution for cruisers as a way to keep online. We considered it mostly for the ability to have access to weather reports and business emails when in the middle of nowhere. It sorta/kinda made sense.
The initial downside for us was that Starlink has a habit of changing their terms of service and pricing. This did not inspire confidence that it would be operational when we actually needed it. So, for a couple of years now, we’ve been on the fence waiting for Starlink to get their act together to the point where they inspire something akin to trust. That’s still in the “Still waiting” department.
Of course, there’s another issue these days with Starlink. The ownership of said company is part and parcel of the current coup of the USA. It would be a frigid day in hell before I’d spend money on Starlink or anything else associated with Elon Musk.
Judging from the current Tesla clusterfuck, you might want to reconsider hanging a visible piece of Starlink crap on your boat. It might be considered a social faux pas in some circles – not unlike wearing one of those red hats.

That said, I get it, from a business stand point. Not having Starlink aboard is going to cost our charter business a chunk of change anytime we’re on passage. I’ve done the math and it’s depressing.
However, there is no frelling way I’m willing to support a company whose owner is in the process of tearing my country apart.
The choice is up to you and you’ll have to live with whatever decision that you decide. In our case, I want to be able to sleep at night.
Nuff said.
