I was not unaware that West Marine has a BOGO offer on winches. The fact is that I already have enough winches so not all that interested. It is a very good deal though if you need winches.
I will, however, comment that West often has sales and you’d be a fool to buy anything from them that is not on sale. Case in point: I monitor West for their sales on rope as from time to time they do have killer deals.
Getting back to winches, I’m pretty sure that that most of my winches are so old that they’d qualify for a senior discount. As it happens, they still do the job and I can’t see any reason to replace them. Fact is, if stuff works, it’s staying.
Anyway, keep in mind that most of the stuff you might need can be found used from a fellow sailor for pennies on the dollar. The advantage of keeping that money within the cruising community is no bad thing.
Or, if winches, go with junk rig and blow winches off…………………
I have no issue with winches. I have quite a few because old ones are cheap and they make a lot of onboard jobs easy. Especially if you have a heavy main to hoist. That said, the cost of new self-tailing winches these days is nuts.
