Most cruising folk I know are obsessed with the weather in general and when it comes to the “H” ting time we can’t get enough input. The first thing I look at when I wake up is the NOAA forecasts and the last thing I check before going to sleep is a cocktail made out of equal parts NOAA, Predict Wind, and Tropical Tidbits because situational awareness is all important during the season.
As it happens, the orange guy and his minions think that we really don’t need agencies like NOAA (or FEMA for that matter) and we’ll be fine going back to the good old days when the only way to know that there was a BIG-FREELING-STORM coming was when your barometer started doing a nose dive.
So, we’ve got a couple of months more of the season and the Atlantic is hot and conditions are good for spawning the sort of storms that I have nightmares about. I won’t go in to the fact that storms outside of the official season are not unheard of and, with the current climate and sea temperature, I wouldn’t be surprised if we had a “H” Ting come and join us for Christmas or Hanukkah and that’s sorta/kinda scary.
I’ll admit that, being an old fart and what goes with it, I’m somewhat inclined to a Luddite inclination where boat stuff is concerned. That said, I’ve grown accustomed to modern science-based services, especially where weather is concerned and it is a goodly thing. Getting back to the days of tapping your barometer is not the future I signed up for.
Just sayin’
