I’ve been spending quite a bit of time mulling over the idea of an alternative earth cruising guide. The idea being that if the world had evolved a bit differently that boats, cruisers and cruising grounds would be a somewhat divergent reality. I started thinking about this when I realized hardly anyone cruises in the southern hemisphere which, led me to asking why and, all of a sudden, I found myself going down a rabbit hole of sorts.
So, here’s a fact you might not be aware of…
There are only about 800 million people living in the southern hemisphere or about ten percent of the world population.
Which, for me at least, has me doing a lot of research on the viability of cruising full time in the southern oceans below the equator. Partly because the northern hemisphere is way too crowded and I like the idea of uncrowded anchorages. Throw in the fact that I’ve been working on a story that involves cruising, black holes, Point Nemo, and a pair of courageous cats. As it happens it mostly, wants to take place in the southern hemisphere.
More about that when it starts to make a bit more sense…
Ditto nuclear weapons/power plants, all somewhat isolated atmospherically by the Equatorial Convergence Zone!
The archipelago of S Chile has always looked mighty attractive…
