Something to ponder, a bit of Caribbean history, and a tidbit from the “dinner table questions” department…
Yachting Monthly has a must read article on GPS spoofing and suchlike. The scary part is it’s not just war zones but anyone anywhere with some rudimentary electronics skills could bring wrecking back into the current century.
Something new to worry about.
For those unacquainted with the wrecking form of piracy it’s simply a way to drive ships aground using false lights or signals.
It was quite the industry for awhile…
Of course, unlike many, I’ve never quite trusted the magic of GPS or old charts for that matter.
It’s not a Luddite thing. I’ve been anchored some places only to find that my chart plotter was telling me I was a mile away. A mile away and on land as it happens. If I’d come into the anchorage at night following the chart plotter, it could have easily put me on the rocks.
The idea of of threading my way through a small reef opening with zero visibility using only a chart plotter is, for me at least, the stuff of nightmares. So, the idea that GPS spoofing is a thing, is scary to the max.
Anyway, a thing to keep in mind as the world spirals around the drain towards dystopia.
