What’s up in my neighborhood, some coffee news, and in “the future is scary to the max” department…
One nice thing about building stuff rather than buying stuff is that it can save you a lot of money.
For instance, I could buy a bespoke dinghy like the 8-foot Nisqually dinghy which is both lovely and would fit quite nicely on my deck. It’s a very nice little boat. It also costs way more than I care to spend.
That being the case, for my next dinghy, I’ll grab a couple of sheets of plywood and build one of Phil Bolger’s designs I’ve yet to build. The Elegant Punt.

It’s a cross somewhere between Bolger’s Tortoise and Nymph and was in Dynamite Payson’s first Instant Boats book which now seems to be a collectable. So, if anyone finds a bedraggled copy in a used book store, I’d love to have another copy.
All up the cost of the Elegant Punt will be around $200 to build with a couple of days of sweat equity. Which is the same as either the Nymph or Tortoise would cost me to build.
We’ll see how it goes.

That 8-foot Nisqually dinghy is a really nice dingy but the price -wow- I bought a used Portland Pudgy that I thought was expensive, but this one is crazy. It does weigh half of what the Pudgy weighs which is the big disadvantage of the Pudgy.
