Just in case you haven’t been paying attention, some free films, and in the “WTF, really?” department…
Of late, I’ve been thinking about replacing the furler on the Islander with something built in the current century. While the aged bit of hardware on my headstay works, it makes me a bit nervous. I don’t like feeling nervous about boat systems.
The problem, of course, is that furling systems are just way more expensive than they should be. Well, at least in my opinion.
Add to the equation that most modern furlers, while simple in concept, have a lot of added features, bells, and whistles that make me wary. Complication adds failure points and expense that just adds to my general nervousness.
Offhand, there are a few roller reefing gears that I like but they mostly have one issue or another and cost more than I desire to spend. However, there is one furler on my shortlist, the Alado, that now appears to be built via 3D printing which has radically lowered its price. Its new moniker is the 3D Furler and is well worth looking into.
Since used hank-on sails are dirt cheap and cost a fraction of the price of a new furler, that might be the way to go. Throw in the fact that I could sell the old one and, hey presto, I’m back on budget. Even better, I could add a staysail to the mix which would be advantageous as well.
So, what’s a poor boy going to do? Roller furling or hank on head sails?
More coming as it develops…
