Somewhat happy making, something about reading, and the word of the day is “Obloquy”…
Every once in a while I find myself considering doing the Panama canal. Partly because it’s the easy way to get to the Pacific and partly as a time saver.
Then I do the math and find it keeps getting more and more expensive.
Ouch.
Of course, the world keeps getting more and more expensive which, I suppose, has a lot to do with the fact that we’re all on a supercharged wicker basket going to hell in a hurry with idiots setting the course.
Back when I was young and foolish, I drove down to Patagonia in my VW van just to climb a couple of peaks and hopefully catch a few massive trout on fly. I failed to climb Cerro Torre, but did ascend Fitzroy, albeit not the route I had in mind. On the plus side, I caught a whole lot of trout…
So, yeah, getting to the Pacific is going to be a long route or a very, very long route.
While I’m no longer young but still oh so foolish, I expect that whatever roundabout plan I come up with will result in some entertaining antics of the dumb as a bag of hammers sort.
On another tack entirely I just noticed that Tom Cunliffe has written a novel and I could use a good read about sailing…
I think we could all use a good read.

Panama……small boat that can fit on a flatbed truck, or, as a European, start looking at boats for sale in California. West-about via the Horn dont appeal much either!
