Stored in the settee I’m currently sitting on is a tool box with a set of pro bicycle tools. So, wherever we sail, I’m able to fix bikes.
You’d be surprised just how many bikes on boats need fixing.
Of course, the main reason I carry the bike tools is to maintain our own bikes but having worked as a bike mechanic back in the day I’m well aware that those tools can produce a reasonable income.
As it happens, I also have a box of tools and materials devoted to fishing gear which, not only enables me to catch fish but sell lures and cruising fishing kits.
Then again, I have a lot of sellable boat skills that can also be traded for money or goods. Need a dinghy built, a rig tuned, or your bottom cleaned?
We also have the “day” jobs. Which we can do pretty much from anywhere.
It’s an uncertain world these days, which makes having a side hustle or three prudent. Too many cruisers have, to coin a phrase, all their eggs in one basket.
Just sayin’
A friend calls ’em “Microstreams of Income”. 8)
One thought would be a decent quality but lower end plastic welder. Fits in a small space and lets one repair or build a whole lot with plastic. Plastic fuel barrels provide 1/4in sheet material around the world, as do most dumpsters.
I DO have a bike, however, that could use some professional attention!
